That was a smart fight by Eddie. Taking Andre to the ground exploited his weakness

More like Andre "Haymaker" Amade. Eddie looked much more technical.

Fans still need to understand this matchup in terms of skill. Eddie Alvarez is no joke a load on anyone in the division, but technically, he isn't as sound as the top fighters. He could surprise us in this GP, but wrestling skill coupled with some decent striking won't get him the wins he needs to impress. Ishida and Kawajiri are basically the same types of fighters with some better wrestling in my opinion.

Dida is getting way too much credit as well. He's a pure Chute Box fighter with Muay Thai and heavy hands, but his ground defense isn't sufficient enough to stop someone like Alvarez from pulverizing him. The one thing Dida had going was his heavy hands, and he has improved. This battle wasn't an improvement though.

Alvarez has a good chance to keep this streak going, but his record wouldn't indicate he can take on top 10 talent. Anyone with a decent sprawl and technical striking will demolish him, and I think we'll see that happen, or someone will counter with his same exact style.

I don't know Leland, I came away pretty impressed by Alvarez in this fight. Was doing a great job changing levels, moves around fairly fluidly, and has solid (not spectacular, but solid) standup. I thought he looked pretty damn good.

But like you said, he just may be a tough test his whole career, a la Chris Lytle. I say the same sentiment I used on Alvarez everytime I watch Lytle fight someone who is not top ten. Both are good fighters, just missing that little extra to be great.

I believe Alvarez is a good fighter, but I just don't think we've seen enough of a dynamic skillset to judge thoroughly. This tournament will in fact give us a good sense about him, and he may be an x-factor in this thing.
