One of the better knockouts that we saw at UFC 80 was the Marcus Davis explosion that rocked Jess Liaudin's head in the first round of their matchup. The better tidbit from the fight that made it even more worthwhile for Davis was Liaudin's mouth running before the battle.
According to John Morgan at TAGGRadio, Davis had this to say:
“He’s a pr**k,” Davis said of Liaudin. “He was running his mouth the whole time up to the fight. He was saying things that fighters normally say… but then he started to go on a disrespectful side.
“Then he apologized at the (pre-fight) press conference. But not even an hour after the press conference, he started getting personal. He was saying that (my) stand-up sucked, that as soon as the fight started (I was) going to take him down… then he started saying I was a liar, that I was a fake. That I’m a fake Irishman.“
This was also mentioned during the broadcast in the capacity that Davis and Liaudin exchanged words, and Jess managed to call Davis a fake Irishman. Liaudin must have forgotten that Davis looks more and more like a shaved gorilla in every fight, and he brings immense power in his striking.
Liaudin ended up trying to use leg kicks to neutralize Davis. Unfortunately for him, he kicked when Davis was clearly moving in to tag him hard. Davis moved forward and blasted Liaudin, ending his winning streak and shutting his mouth for good.
Where does Davis go?
Unfortunately for the fans, Fitch and Davis seems unlikely after today's story at MMAJunkie regarding Davis's knowledge of his next fight. He states that it will take place June 14th against a top 10 or top 5 opponent.
My thoughts are potentially an Akihiro Gono, Ryo Chonan, rather than a top 10 fighter, but that depends on what the UFC considers their top 10 Welterweights. Potentially, we could see Koscheck or Hughes, but my pick would be Diego Sanchez. I think the UFC will probably use him before that date though, so it's really a toss up.
Davis is turning out to be a force in the Welterweight division, and it comes at a good time. Georges St. Pierre's talent is looking like it is beyond anybody in the division currently, but with some big wars underneath him, it could make for some interesting matchups for the division, and some exciting prospects for the title picture.
